Cyst Excisions
What is it?
A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that can form in various parts of the body, including the foot and ankle. Cysts in the foot often develop near tendons, joints, or underneath the skin. They can vary in size and may cause symptoms such as swelling, pain, or discomfort when pressure is applied.
In podiatry, the most common types of cysts we treat include:
- Ganglion Cysts: These are the most frequently encountered cysts in the foot, typically located along tendons or joints.
- Synovial Cysts: These cysts form near joints or tendons, often filled with a clear, viscous fluid.
- Bursae Cysts: These develop in the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) near joints and can lead to swelling and pain.
- Soft Tissue Cysts: These can occur anywhere in the soft tissue of the foot, often causing visible lumps or tenderness.
While many cysts are benign and may not cause symptoms, they can affect your comfort and ability to walk or engage in physical activity. Surgical removal (excision) is often the most effective solution for persistent or problematic cysts.
Causes
Cysts in the foot and ankle can develop for a variety of reasons, including:
- Trauma or Injury: Injury to a tendon or joint can cause fluid to collect, leading to the formation of a cyst.
- Repetitive Stress: Activities that put repetitive pressure on the feet or ankles can increase the likelihood of cyst formation.
- Joint Inflammation: Conditions like arthritis can lead to inflammation in the joints, which can contribute to cyst development.
- Genetics: Some individuals may be more predisposed to developing cysts due to genetic factors.
- Fluid Accumulation: Cysts often form as a result of fluid collecting in a localized area of the foot or ankle, which can be triggered by swelling or irritation.
While most cysts are non-cancerous, they can still cause discomfort, limit movement, and even interfere with daily activities, especially if they grow in size or become inflamed.
How Can We Help?
If you are experiencing pain or discomfort from a cyst in your foot or ankle, we offer comprehensive treatment options to help you get back to normal activity. Here’s how we can help:
- Diagnosis and Evaluation
Our experienced podiatrist, Anthony Fable, will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the type of cyst and determine whether excision is necessary. This may include a physical examination, ultrasound, or MRI to confirm the diagnosis and assess the cyst’s size and location. - Cyst Excision Surgery
If a cyst is causing persistent pain or affecting your mobility, cyst excision may be the most effective option. We perform this procedure using minimally invasive techniques, ensuring minimal scarring and faster recovery. The goal is to remove the cyst entirely while preserving surrounding tissue and function. - Post-Surgical Care
After the cyst excision, we provide detailed instructions for post-operative care to promote optimal healing and prevent complications. This may include rest, elevation, and a prescribed course of rehabilitation exercises to restore movement and strength. - Prevention and Management
Once the cyst is excised, we can work with you to minimize the risk of future cysts. This may involve adjusting footwear, suggesting lifestyle modifications, and recommending techniques to reduce stress or pressure on your feet and ankles.
If you suspect you have a cyst or are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to provide personalized care and get you back to pain-free movement as soon as possible.
