Severs Disease
What is it?
Severs Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis) is a painful inflammation of the growth plate between the achillies tendon and the heel bone which results in heel pain. Severs disease is seen primarily in children ages 8-13 years of age. (Predominately in boys)
Causes:
As the growth plate is active in the young, it is more susceptible to injury during regular high exertion/repetitive stressing of this area of the body.
How can we help?
Our podiatrist recommends an immediate reduction in the sporting activities that may be responsible. After a period of rest, certain precautions must be taken as sporting activity is cautiously reintroduced again. This condition usually resolves itself once growth has ceased. There are a number of options available to reduce the heel pain caused by this condition.
- Custom made orthotics
